The cloth wears well and not liable to gather dust, so is used for linings and men's summer coats. A typical cloth is woven 56-in., 72 X 70, 2/80/ 28's alpaca.

14 Felt
BILLIARD CLOTH, or FELTThe finest textile fabric made and is a woollen cloth of the beaver type. The wool is very carefully selected and then spun with great care. Expert weavers operate the looms which weave into cloths the thousands of very fine threads. The cloth is then milled so thoroughly that it is waterproof and capable of resisting the dampest atmosphere. The dye used is such that light has little effect upon it. The best merino wool is used, and when ready for use the cloth has a perfect level face, soft and smooth. Plain weave is used for the best grades and 3-shaft twill for others. Widths from 72-in. to 81-in. Cloth shrinks about 331/3 per cent from reed width to the finished width. An all-cotton billiard cloth is now being made and is meeting with much support. ———————— A wool fabric united without weaving. It is actually a sheet of wool fibre, matted into a substantial texture by the application of heat, moisture and pressure. There are many woven fabrics that are felted so heavily that it is difficult to decide whether they are woven or not, as the threads are so closely interlocked that they cannot be separated, and this fabric is stronger than a carded felt of same weight. The shrinkage of a woven felt fabric may be up to 50 per cent in both width and length. The peculiar property of felt is believed to have been known in early times, and the process of felting was used for the tents of the Tartar, as well as for articles of their clothing. It is difficult to say when felted wool was first used for hats. Hats of felt were worn in England in the Middle Ages. -
15 Merinos
The merino sheep gives the finest of all wools up to 80's counts, which is very soft and white. The original merino fabric was woven from this wool, but now many so-called merinos have no trace of the merino wool. An all-wool fabric with a twill weave, dyed in colours, and variously made 25-in. to 27-in. wide, from 64 X 36 to 120 X 96 ends and picks per inch, 30's to 36's warp and 40's to 44's weft. Today merino or botany wool is only used in the production of worsted fabrics of the highest quality. There are, however, fabrics known as merinos that are not truly named - the hosiery trade makes a fabric from a mixture of cotton and wool and the low woollen trade know a shoddy fabric as a merino. Merino cloth was first produced in 1804 at Rheims and known as Shale. -
16 Patti
PATTI, or PATThe hair of a goat, common in Kabul and Peshawar. It is used in making the fabric known as Pattu. ———————— A wool fabric native woven in the hill districts of India, in pieces from 9-in. to 18-in. wide and 10 yards to 12 yards long. Made of pat wool or sometimes Shabri. Several of these are sewn together to make a pattu. ———————— An Indian term given to a variety of carpets made in the Madras Presidency. The designs are very crude and only blue, white and red colours used. The yarns are generally cotton in very coarse counts; wool is seldom used, but jute is sometimes used. The term also describes the leg wrapping made in narrow strips from cotton or wool yarns and wound spirally round the leg from ankle to knee. The military puttee is derived from this. The term also describes another narrow fabric made 9-in. to 12-in. wide and stitched together to make bags, tents, screens, etc. This is made from cotton or jute yarns, and is common in the Madras district. -
